THE CATHOLIC PREACHERS The excellent works of Brischar13 and Kehrein14 name and discuss a number of German Catholic preachers for this period; they also, sometimes by full sermons and sometimes by illustrative extracts, put before us the means of judging the work of the most important men. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the fullest indebtedness to works which have rendered unnecessary independent research in a difficult and unaccustomed field.15 At the beginning of the century a number of Jesuit
